SIMON SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022
SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING
GO GREEN — EARTH DAY In 2022, 153 of our centers continued their commitment to raising awareness of sustainability during Earth Day. These centers hosted events in partnership with over 270 community organizations, including local nonprofits, schools, and government agencies. The events focused on education and physical impact initiatives that helped to showcase the importance of sustainability in our local communities. During the Earth Day events, almost 430 retailers participated and we were pleased to welcome over 14.5K visitors, demonstrating the continued engagement and importance of sustainability within our centers. During Earth Day, we organized an Electronic Recycling event at Lenox Square, ® over 15K pounds of electronics were collected, filling three truckloads for recycling. WHERE YOU SHOP MATTERS We believe that "where you shop matters," and as such, we rolled out the Where You Shop Matters campaign across 18 of our centers. This campaign included local activations that were designed to educate shoppers on the environmental and economic benefits of shopping at Simon centers. Our research shows that physical shopping can be up to 60% more environmentally sustainable than digital shopping. By shopping at our centers, shoppers are able to reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with digital shopping, including increased returns, expedited shipping, and additional packaging. Additionally, our research shows that the lower emissions associated with brick-and-mortar shopping are driven by shoppers making a greater number of purchases per trip and combining their physical visits with other activities as part of their “trip chain.”
DO GOOD WITH DENIM The Simon Back to School community event was a resounding success, with 171 Simon properties hosting a Denim Donation Drive in 2022. This drive was organized to benefit 167 local community organizations, and it proved to be an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our support of the local communities. The event was also a great platform to educate and raise awareness on the importance of recycling. Over 9.5K pieces of denim were collected, which were repurposed or reused in a sustainable manner. This initiative was a significant step toward our goal of promoting environmental sustainability and creating a positive impact in the local communities where we operate.
